OmegaQuant: What can you learn from your Omega-3 Index

Did you know that we can actually measure the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids that make up your body’s red blood cell membranes. We can then take that data and compare it to other cultures that have Omega-3:Omega-6 ratios different different from our own and derive correlations to your health based on those ratios.

Omega 3 fatty acids are crucial for our health, as our bodies do not produce them and they must be obtained through our diet. These fatty acids provide many benefits, such as:

  • promoting fetal development

  • improving brain, eye, and heart health

  • reducing inflammation

  • reducing the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome complications, blood clots, and dementia

However, it is important to be cautious about the type of Omega 3s consumed, as the Standard American Diet typically provides a ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 that is about 1:20, whereas a healthy ratio is 1:2.

Omega 6 sources (which we consume too much of) are found in vegetable oils, meat, poultry, and eggs, while Omega 3 sources (we need more of) are found in wild-caught fatty fish, quality Omega 3 supplements, flax, chia, and leafy greens. It is recommended to consume 250-500mg of EPA and DHA daily.

OmegaQuant Labs has created a reliable way to assess our Omega 3 status. An Omega-3 Index Test is available through Columbia Family Chiropractic.
